The mission of Sacred Heart School is to instill Christian values, practice academic excellence and actively learn about Christ.
How is Sacred Heart doing as a school?
From our principal:
Our current building at Sacred Heart school is 98 years old and has been a beacon of light for several generations of students in the Emporia area. With the climate of our society, I believe the need for faith based education has never been greater. Our parents and alumni understand the value and importance of a Catholic Education. Our enrollment has increased the last couple of years at Sacred Heart School and the future looks bright. Because of the increase in enrollment, we now have one teacher per grade level. We have added veteran and highly qualified teachers to our current core staff who have a strong commitment for excellence for our school families. To move forward and continue to provide this invaluable opportunity, we need a new school building. We are praying for your generous support and look forward to a successful building campaign. Thank you for allowing us to shape tomorrow's leaders who will be Disciples of Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior.
Sincerely,
Curtis Simons, principal
What do we do to foster faith?
Every morning we begin the school day with morning prayer with all students and staff present. Our students attend Mass on Fridays, Adoration on Wednesdays, and have the opportunity to go to Confession. Throughout the year, students are taught the basics of the faith, including:
The basics of virtue ethics (virtue in education)
The lives of the Saints
Liturgical living
Salvation history
At Sacred Heart, faith comes first, and we seek to make everything we do grounded in forming our students and their families as disciples of Jesus Christ
What does it mean that we have highly qualified teachers?
Being highly qualified is not just a qualitative description. Our teachers possess education, certification and experience well beyond what is required by the state. Additionally, being a small school helps us to form a tightly-knit team which ensures that our students succeed academically.
What sets our curriculum apart?
At Sacred Heart, our new science curriculum is Stemscope, which is designed to help students foster critical thinking and develop each student’s inquiry to trigger curiosity in their natural surroundings. Two years ago, we also introduced the CKLA reading curriculum. The Amplify Knowledge Language Arts utilizes a multi-sensory approach to phonics and sequenced texts to help students learn to read and read to learn. We have also implemented a character education program called Education in Virtue. This program emphasizes positive virtues to become disciples of Christ and to lead a virtuous life. Every 2 weeks we introduce a new virtue or word. Teachers give students the meaning of the word, opposing traits, and ways to cultivate these positive virtues.
How to our test scores compare to the state average?
A majority of our students have performed above the state average for the reading and math scores on the Kansas State Summative Assessments.
How is the school accredited?
The Kansas State Department of Education has recognized and endorsed Sacred Heart Catholic School as Accredited. This accreditation status is based upon our teachers serving the needs of its students by focusing on the success of every student. We progress monitor students by testing and instructing them to achieve their highest potential. The school is also dual-accredited through Cognia Accreditation.
