Physical Education

Students receive Physical Education every day. Students are exposed to a wide range of activities that promote teamwork, physical development, increase motor skills, and healthy lifestyles. The instructor incorporates health and nutrition lessons regularly to improve students' understanding of physical development. Further, step and heart rate trackers help students track their activity levels and set goals. The instructor also works with teachers to implement concepts to help students manage stress and hyperactivity.

Music

Students receive a well-rounded music education that emphasizes music literacy and appreciation, using a blend of ear training, theory exercises, and games to teach students the basics of how to read music. Students also learn about diverse and culturally significant composers representing a wide array of genres, all while examining the role music plays in their daily lives.

Art

Students receive art instruction every week in which they can develop their creativity and techniques in art. Our certified art instructor crafts lessons designed to help a student become familiar with concepts, origins, and artists while promoting curiosity and individuality. Student artwork is displayed all year throughout the school building. Beyond art classes, teachers integrate art and art concepts into other subject areas throughout the day.

Technology

Sacred Heart recognizes the need for up-to-date technology in the classroom. As such, all students have access to individual devices while at school. Primary students use touch screen devices, while intermediate-grade students have personal computers. These devices are used as tools to help access learning and fulfill the Archdiocesan requirements for technical skill development. The devices stay in the classroom and are only used in supervised settings. Along with student devices, each classroom has an Apple TV equipped with Apple Classroom, allowing the students and teachers to interact with a project from anywhere in the room. 

Student Services

Student Improvement Team (SIT)

The Student Improvement Team process is a systematic approach to addressing a student's academic or behavioral needs. Any requirements of a student in K-6th grade who is struggling either academically or behaviorally will be brought to the Student Improvement Team. The team of teachers, administrators, parents of the child, and child (if age-appropriate) will meet to devise and implement strategies to help the student succeed. ​

Title I Instructors

The Title I Instructor works cooperatively with classroom teachers and provides small-group instruction in addition to the classroom teacher's instruction. The instructor gathers and interprets assessment data and utilizes instructional strategies and research-based interventions specific to the student. The instructor focuses on the science of reading and academic acquisition development.

District Support

Students who show a need beyond what can be provided by the SIT or Title 1 instructor can be referred to the Emporia School district for assessment. These assessments at Sacred Heart determine whether the student qualifies for district services. These services include but are not limited to speech and language, special education in reading and math, and individualized service plans. An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for students who qualify is developed to outline what services will be provided and determine when and where services will take place.
